What Are Fire Door Hinges?

Fire door hinges are one of the most important components within a fire doorset, yet they’re often one of the least understood.
To many people, a hinge simply allows a door to open and close. In reality, a fire door hinge performs a far more demanding role. It must safely support the weight of the door throughout its service life, allow the door closer to operate correctly, maintain the door’s alignment within the frame and continue to function during a fire as temperatures increase dramatically.
Every opening and closing cycle places stress on the hinges. Over thousands of cycles, poor installation, incorrect screw selection, inadequate maintenance or unsuitable hinge specification can all contribute to premature wear and performance issues.
Selecting the correct hinge is therefore about far more than choosing a size. Fire door hinges should be compatible with the tested doorset, suitable for the door’s weight and intended frequency of use, and appropriate for the environment in which they will operate.

Why Fire Door Hinges Matter
Every fire door relies on its hinges to perform several critical functions simultaneously.
They must:
- Support the full weight of the door.
- Maintain consistent clearance gaps.
- Allow the door closer to operate correctly.
- Resist wear over many years of service.
- Continue supporting the door during a fire.
- Keep the door leaf correctly positioned within the frame.
If the hinges begin to fail, the problems usually extend well beyond the hinges themselves. A dropped door can create incorrect perimeter gaps, prevent the latch engaging correctly, increase friction against the floor or frame and affect the door closer’s ability to return the door to its fully closed position.
For this reason, hinges should never be viewed as simple pieces of hardware. They form an integral part of the overall fire doorset.
How Fire Door Hinges Work
Although simple in appearance, a hinge is a carefully engineered mechanical component.
Its primary job is to transfer the weight of the door into the frame while allowing smooth rotational movement around the hinge pin.
As the door opens, the hinge knuckle rotates around the pin while the bearings or washers reduce friction between the moving parts. This movement is repeated thousands of times throughout the life of the door.
The hinge must also resist twisting forces generated by the weight of the door, repeated impacts, misuse and the closing force applied by the door closer.
Poor installation or inadequate fixings can introduce additional stresses that shorten the hinge’s service life.
Why Fire Door Hinges Are Different
Fire door hinges are not simply stronger versions of standard door hinges.
They are selected as part of a tested fire doorset designed to maintain its performance for a specified fire resistance period.
During a fire, the hinges may be exposed to extremely high temperatures while continuing to support the full weight of the door leaf.
Hinge cut-outs also remove timber from the edge of the door and frame. Depending on the tested doorset design, intumescent hinge pads may be incorporated to help compensate for this reduction in timber and reduce heat transfer around the hinge area as temperatures rise.
For this reason, hinges, fixings and any associated intumescent protection should always be compatible with the tested doorset specification.
Lessons From Site
People often think a fire door hinge either works or it doesn’t.
In reality, most hinge problems begin during installation.
A hinge that’s been fitted into an inaccurate mortice, secured using damaged screws or forced into position by over-tightening may function perfectly on the day it’s is installed. The problems often appear months or years later as the door begins to drop, clearances change or fixings loosen.
Good hinge installation isn’t about making the hinge fit.
It’s about making the joinery fit the hinge.
