Before reaching for a screwdriver or replacing components, it’s important to understand what is actually preventing the door from closing correctly. This article explores several closing faults I’ve encountered on site, how they were diagnosed, and why taking a methodical approach can prevent unnecessary adjustments and repairs.

Don’t Assume the Door Is Binding
One installation appeared to have a classic binding problem. As the door closed, it seemed to be catching on the frame stop.
However, after checking the rebate, stop laths and clearances, everything was within the expected tolerances. No timber components were actually making contact.
The source of the resistance was somewhere completely different.
When Blade Intumescent Seals Behave Like a Spring
After fitting new blade (fin) intumescent seals, I found that the blade itself was creating resistance as the door closed.
Rather than immediately folding into its normal operating position, the blade compressed against the frame stop and behaved like a small spring, pushing the door back slightly before settling naturally through repeated use.
Until the seal had bedded in through normal use, the door gave every appearance of binding even though the rebate and frame were correct.
Without checking the complete doorset, it would have been easy to start altering hinges or trimming the door unnecessarily.
Professional Site Observation
During remedial work I came across a fire door that appeared to be binding against the frame. The obvious assumption was that the closer required adjustment or the frame had moved. After checking the rebate, clearances and frame alignment, all were found to be correct. The resistance was actually being caused by a newly installed blade intumescent seal that had not yet bedded into its normal operating position.
Previously Used Blade Seals Can Behave Differently
Another interesting observation came when refitting blade seals that had already been used.
Over time, repeated closing cycles cause the blade to develop a slight set in the direction it naturally folds.
If that same seal is later removed and fitted the opposite way around, the blade initially resists folding because it has already been trained in the opposite direction.
In my experience, it is often quicker to remove the seal, rotate it into the correct orientation and refit it than to wait for the blade to gradually reform.

Don’t Forget the Door Closer Arm
Not every rebounding door is caused by the seal.
I’ve also encountered situations where the adjustable arm of the overhead door closer had moved because the clamping screws had loosened.
The closer still appeared to operate, but because the arm position had changed, the preload was no longer correct. The result was reduced closing force during the final part of travel and poor latching performance.
Whenever diagnosing a rebounding fire door, it’s worth checking the closer arm position as well as the seals, latch and frame before making further adjustments.
Diagnose Before You Adjust
One lesson I’ve learnt over the years is that the visible symptom is rarely enough to identify the real fault.
A fire door that rebounds, fails to latch or appears to bind may be affected by a single issue or several small faults acting together. Looking at one component in isolation can easily lead to the wrong conclusion. A systematic inspection of the frame, clearances, hardware, seals and closer will usually identify the true cause more quickly than adjusting components by trial and error.
